New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Friday, January 5, 2024 …. Digital Radiography Room #3 at the Aberdeen Hospital has been renovated for increased efficiency and workflow, including the installation of a new GE Definium digital x-ray unit.

The Aberdeen Health Foundation committed more than $600,000 to the project, fully funding the equipment and contributing towards the necessary renovations to the space. Work was completed this past Spring, with the room officially opening for the public on May 13, 2023.

The upgrades came just in time, with the growth of the hospital’s orthopedic program causing an influx of patients.

“The goal was to replace our aging equipment that no longer had service life with the vendor, and parts were becoming harder and harder to come by when something had broken,” says Miranda Thomson, Manager of Diagnostic Imaging and Non-Invasive Cardiac Investigation at the hospital.

Purchased with funding from the Aberdeen Health Foundation, the unit has helped to streamline patient care and improve ergonomics for staff since renovations completed in May 2023.

The room itself was expanded to better accommodate the larger equipment and to allow staff to move patients on stretchers with ease. The new space received cupboards, countertops, and a handwashing sink, as well as new flooring and blue wall colour, which was chosen by a staff vote.

“The new unit is a state-of-the-art machine, with improved ergonomics and auto positioning that benefits both staff and patients with a much more modern experience,” explains Thomson. “One staff member has told me it has really reduced the repetitive stress on her shoulders that we often encounter as MRTs due to reaching overhead to move the large equipment.”

“These upgrades wouldn’t have been possible without the contributions of the Aberdeen Health Foundation. The work of the Foundation helps allow the health care to team provide state of the art, quality care to the patients of Nova Scotia, right here in Pictou County.”

The Aberdeen Health Foundation is the leading charity for enhancing health care in Pictou County. In 2023 the Foundation invested over $2 million to fund medical equipment and enhance health programs at the Aberdeen Hospital and in our community.
