Paediatric Therapy Gets Fun with New Bubble Tube
Thanks to a directed gift from a donor, the Aberdeen Hospital’s Rehabilitative Department now has a Bubble Tube.
“This equipment is absolutely engaging for children, and it works its magic by pulling children in to look, touch, follow and move,” says Laura Hasiuk, Occupational Therapist. Hasiuk, who strives to make the Paediatric Therapy Room as non-medical and playful as possible, is impressed with the therapeutic potential as well as the way it brings calm to the room.
It seems like a simple premise but it is a powerful new tool for working with children with disabilities. It creates a natural motivation that makes time at therapy fun and something to look forward to. It can also be used as a reward to reinforce a behaviour.
The tube is multisensory; it is engaging visually, makes bubble sounds and responds to touch with vibration. So, for Gabby, who has a visual impairment and struggles to sit up, it is stimulating her vision and helping her build strength all at once.
“Because of the Bubble Tube, Gabby is getting her therapy and it doesn’t feel like work, it’s play,” says her mom Jennifer, who was so excited to see Gabby’s response and was moved that this equipment has been made possible by a donor.
The Bubble Tube was purchased with a gift from Molly’s Rainbows, a group of family and friends who get together every September to host a fun fair for families and use the proceeds to support causes that help children and their families. The Aberdeen Health Foundation is one of the charities they regularly support.
“The goal of Molly’s Rainbows is to make children smile. Aside from the carnival, it was the best feeling to be able to witness Gabby’s reaction to the colourful fish and bubbles and to see her joy,” says Jodi MacIvor. Having witnessed the impact, this year’s event on September 17 will fundraise for another Bubble Tube, which will be for the Aberdeen Hospital’s new Emergency Department.
