Introducing ‘New to the Crew’: Connecting newcomers and the community in Pictou County

New Glasgow, NS Making friends and connections in a new community can be hard, but there’s a new opportunity in Pictou County to help make things a little easier.

Healthy Pictou County, a physician-led grassroots organization focused on enhancing the local healthcare landscape, announced a series of social, dubbed ‘New to the Crew’ – a initiative to connect those who love Pictou County with those new to the community. Healthy Pictou County is proudly partnering with a variety of organizations including various municipalities, Ignite, the Pictou County Partnership, the Pictou Antigonish Regional Library, and more, to promote and support this initiative.

Born from the community’s desire for a welcoming platform, ‘New to the Crew’ aims to introduce individuals new to Pictou County to each other and to local residents and amenities through engaging monthly gatherings. These events, funded by the Office of Healthcare Professional Recruitment Community Fund, will feature rotating locations across the county, showcasing both beloved local spots and exciting new venues.

“We are thrilled to launch the ‘New to the Crew’ socials, providing a fun and inclusive way for anyone new to the community to connect with people and find their own sense of community,” said Nicole LeBlanc, Project Navigator at Healthy Pictou County. “Whether you’re new to the area or simply love Pictou County, these gatherings are designed to welcome all and facilitate fun, meaningful connections.”

Each ‘New to the Crew’ event will offer a variety of food options and feature local Pictou County ambassadors, identifiable by special buttons, who are eager to engage in friendly conversation. To encourage inclusivity, tabletop tent cards will indicate open seats, ensuring all attendees feel welcomed and encouraged to join in.

In consideration of diverse preferences, venues offering alcoholic beverages for purchase will be sure to also offer non-alcoholic alternatives. Moreover, event locations are chosen with accessibility in mind, rotating through different communities and considering transit routes to facilitate participation.

“The Pictou County Partnership is excited to see the launch of Healthy Pictou County’s ‘New to the Crew’ initiative,” said Wade Tibbo, CEO Pictou County Partnership. “It can be difficult to build a social network when moving to a new community and these events promise to be a fun way for everyone to get involved with welcoming newcomers and making new friendships.”

The initiative is set to unfold over the coming year, with events promoted in convenient three-month intervals, allowing participants to plan and join in the next gathering. The first event will be held on Wednesday August 7th from 5-7pm at Backstage Brewing 37 Bridge Ave, Stellarton – all are welcome.
