Nova Scotia Power Employee Supports
New Hope’s Breakfast Program

When Scott Cameron realized he had a bigger award from his employer than expected, he decided to share it with others. Nova Scotia Power’s Safety Milestone Awards rewards staff for every 250 days they go incident free. Scott’s team had gone 1,100 days without incident.
Employees typically use the cash incentive for new safety equipment and apparel, but with this award coming so close to Christmas, each wanted to use theirs to help others.
Scott didn’t have far to look. He chose to make a donation to the Aberdeen Health Foundation to fund a new breakfast program at New Hope.
Scott’s wife Terri is a nurse at New Hope, a community-based rehabilitation program for people living with mental illness. Through Terri, Scott knew that many of New Hope’s clients had been affected by the loss of the Breakfast Program at the Life Shelter. New Hope wanted to fill this gap and ensure that all their clients are well nourished and fully able to participate in the wellness initiatives they offer.

“The breakfast program works on many levels beyond nutrition,” says Terri, an RN. “Clients prepare the breakfast alongside us. They learn cooking skills, kitchen hygiene, and etiquette as well as about eating for optimal health. We include them in food selection, reviewing flyers, and shopping. But as importantly, they are learning to socialize in a safe environment and building confidence is a vital part of wellbeing. ”
Executive Director Susan Malcolm says, “The Aberdeen Health Foundation is pleased to facilitate this donation to support this wonderful program that addresses so many of the social factors that play a role in health and wellness,” says.
Thanks to donors like Scott and such a giving community, the Aberdeen Health Foundation is celebrating 30 years and funding more than $20 million in advanced equipment and care for our region.
