Scholarship Helping Student Fulfill Dream

Music fuels Anna Bond. Singing and studying music is just something she has always wanted to do. Though she grew up in a household with a love of Celtic music, Anna’s taste was distinct, having always felt drawn to Classical music.

She asked and received singing lessons at the age of seven. It would be the start of a life of making music and exceeding expectations.

Education is very important to Anna. “As an adoptee from Romania, I have always regarded education as a privilege and so I have pursued it at every opportunity.”

It probably also helped that her mom was a teacher. “I have so many experiences of waiting for mom at school, being in that setting. My mom was always known as a good teacher. My whole life I’ve been exposed to the difference one teacher can make.”

Anna is bringing her two passions together, pursuing her dream to be a music educator. She has completed both a Bachelor and Masters of Music and is now in the final months of her Music Education degree at Memorial University.

Anna is the 2016 recipient of the Aberdeen Health Foundation’s Pat Lord Award. The scholarship is for Pictou County adoptees who are enrolled in post-secondary education who have demonstrated extensive involvement in their school and community. Funding for this award comes from the CAS Endowment, which was established in 2009 when the former Children’s Aid Society (CAS) of Pictou County transferred its donations and bequests to the Aberdeen Health Foundation.

“I’ve been able to have a wonderful life here. I feel very fortunate for my adoption and I feel an obligation to give back. A part of me has always felt like I should share the knowledge I’ve gained. Music is a part of who I am now. My life would be unfulfilled without it.”

Now celebrating its 30th Anniversary, the Aberdeen Health Foundation has turned the generosity of donors, including the former Children’s Aid Society, into more than $20 million in capital, equipment, and service improvements for health care in Pictou County.
